Selection Criteria Professional Display Refrigerators

Methodology presents the most energy efficient professional refrigerators and freezers on the European market.


The products listed:

  • have integrated condensing units (models with remote condensing unit are not considered)
  • are display cabinets (for display and selling of foodstuffs and beverages)
  • have (transparent) doors or lids
  • are available on the European market

Technical criteria

All models on meet the following criteria:

  • Natural refrigerant (R290/propane, R600a/isobutane).
  • Maximum annual energy consumption according to EN ISO 23953-2:2005 as given in the following table:

Glass-door refrigerators 700 kWh + ( liters net volume * 1 kWh/liter )
Ice cream freezers 540 kWh + ( liters net volume * 0.7 kWh/liter )
Supermarket freezers 2100 kWh + ( liters net volume * 1 kWh/liter )
Other categories will be added when product information is available. For example:
  • Counter and 2-doors glass-door refrigerators
  • Supermarket refrigerators (chest and vertical cabients with transparent doors)

Energy consumption

  • Measurement in climate class 3 (25°C, 60% RH)
  • Primarily according to the current harmonised standard. This is EN ISO 23953-2:2005/A1:2012 (published May 2012). As of today no such product data is yet available.
  • In a transitional phase, the lists are based on declarations according to EN ISO 23953-2:2005.
  • Also accepted are declarations according to EN 441 (energy consumption is corrected by a factor of 0.91 *)
* Reason for the correction are different door opening regimes for EN ISO 23953-2:2005 (6 second door openings) and EN 441 (12 second door openings), respectively.

Electricity costs

Costs for electricity during product's life time. Assumptions:

  • Typical life time: 8 years
  • Annual energy consumption: Value from product list in kWh/year (EN ISO 23953-2:2005)
  • Tariff of electricity: 0.15 €/kWh (there however can be large differences depending on country or electrical utility)

Net volume in liters.

Gross volume

Gross volume in liters.

Storage temperatures

Storage temperature range in °C.


Annual energy consumption in kWh/year. Accepted measuring protocols see above.

Ambient temperature

The ambient temperature range in °C indicates the recommended room temperature range for cold appliances according to the climate classes.
