Selection Criteria Professional Storage Refrigerators

Methodology presents the most energy efficient professional refrigerators and freezers on the European market.


The products listed:

  • have integrated condensing units (models with remote condensing unit are not considered)
  • are storage cabinets (not for display and selling of foodstuffs and beverages)
  • are available on the European market

Technical criteria

All models on meet the following criteria:

  • Natural refrigerant (propane/R290, isobutane/R600a).
  • Minimum energy class according to draft EU energy label from June 2012 as given in the following table:

Energy consumption

  • Primarily according to the current harmonised standard. This is EN ISO 23953-2:2005/A1:2012 (published May 2012). As of today no such product data is yet available.
  • The following measuring protocols are accepted in the transitional phase, always climate class 4 (30°C, 55% RH):
    • CECED Italia Test protocol for professional refrigerators and freezers
    • EN 441
    • EN ISO 23953-2:2005

The measuring protocols differ in door opening regimes. Declarations of energy consumption are therefor adjusted by factors in the table below (based on Normalisation Methodology):

Electricity costs

Costs for electricity during product's life time. Assumptions:

  • Typical life time: 8 years
  • Annual energy consumption: Calculated according to draft EU energy label in kWh/year
  • Tariff of electricity: 0.15 €/kWh (there however can be large differences depending on country or electrical utility)

Net volume

Net volume in liters. According to measuring protocol. If not available, then according to manufacturer's product information (may be adjusted by the typical divergence for each manufacturer between measuring protocol values and product information).

Gross volume

Gross volume in liters. According to manufacturer's product information.

Storage temperatures

Storage temperature range in °C.

Energy class

Energy efficiency class according to draft EU energy label from June 2012. Most efficent is A+++, least efficient is G. Depending on the category, there are not yet models available in the best energy classes.

Energy index

Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) according to draft EU energy label from June 2012. Value in percent (%). The lower the value, the more efficient the product.


Annual energy consumption in kWh/year. Accepted measuring protocols see above.


  • R600a (isobutane)

  • R134a and R404a (traditional fluorinated refrigerant)

Ambient temperature

The ambient temperature range in °C indicates the recommended room temperature range for cold appliances according to the climate classes.
