Selection Criteria Vacuum Cleaners

Methodology

Topten (Best products of Europe) presents the most energy efficient vacuum cleaners of Europe. Considered are upright and cylinder cleaners, with or without dustbag, and handhelds.

Technical criteria

In order to be displayed on topten.eu, vacuum cleaners must meet the following criteria:
cylinder handheld / upright
Maximum energy consumption 300 Wh 200 Wh
Minimum dust removal efficiency on carpet 75 % 70 %
Minimum dust removal efficiency on hard floor surface 95 % 90 %
Maximum dust emissions 0.04 mg/m3 0.04 mg/m3

The vacuum cleaners‘ values are determined in accordance with EN 60312. Relevant values have to be provided by the suppliers. Suppliers who are not able to provide these values cannot claim to have their appliances displayed on topten. All declarations can be verified by random measurements.

Criteria will be adapted to the market situation.

Order of presentation

The products are ranked according to their electricity costs during 10 years. The order of presentation can be changed by clicking on the headings of the tables.

Glossary

Products of similar construction and identical technical values are displayed only once. Similar models’ names are listed under ‘similar models’.

Electricity costs (€ in 10 years)

Assumptions:
  • costs for electricity during 10 years (product’s lifetime)
  • tariff of electricity:  0.15 €/kWh (should be understood as order of magnitude as there can be large differences depending on country or electrical utility).
  • Cleaning of 150 m2 per week (75m2 twice a week)

Energy consumption (Wh)

Energy consumed for cleaning  10 m2,  in accordance with EN 60312.

Dust removal efficiency on carpet (%)

Dust removal efficiency on carpet according to EN 60312: five strokes on a Wilton carpet. 75% is a good removal efficiency.

Dust removal efficiency on hard floor surface (%)

Dust removal efficiency on hard floor surface according to EN 60312: five strokes on a specified hard floor surface. 95% is a good removal efficiency.

Dust emissions (mg/m3)

Dust emissions in accordance with EN 60312. 0.04 mg/m3 is a good value.

Wattage (W)

Power input in Watt according to the type plate. In reality the wattage is usually lower than indicated.

Weight (kg)

Weight in kg according to producers‘ declarations.

Bagless

Bagless models don’t need a dust bag. Dust particles are collected directly in the cleaner’s canister instead. Emptying the canister can however be accompanied by considerable dust emissions.

Dust capacity (l)

Volume of dust in liters which can theoretically be stored in the dust bag or canister.

Available in countries

Countries in which a product is available according to producers declarations; country codes according to ISO.

EU= available throughout the European Union
CH= Switzerland
On demand= producers could not indicate the availability and consumers have to ask on their own.
